Congenital Syphilis Incidence Rate

Measurement Period: 2020
This indicator shows the congenital syphilis incidence rate in cases per 100,000 live births by year of birth.

Why is this important?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum, which can also be spread from an infected mother to her unborn child.

Syphilis that is passed from mother to infant during pregnancy causes a disease called congenital syphilis. Congenital syphilis is a severe, disabling, and often life-threatening infection in infants. Mothers who have syphilis can spread the disease through the placenta to the unborn infant. Further, pregnant women with untreated early syphilis experience perinatal death in up to 40% of cases.
The Healthy People 2030 national health target is to reduce congenital syphilis to 33.9 cases per 100,000 live births.
